My Vision For Muinebheag

Vision and Priorities for Bagenalstown Electoral Area

The Bagenalstown electoral area takes in the majority of the South Carlow region and has much to offer to its residents and visitors alike. I am very familiar with all the towns and villages in the area having spent most of my life living in its major urban centre, Bagenalstown. As the Green Party Local Area Representative I hope to build on the heritage and successes of the region, so that it has a sustainable future economically, socially and environmentally.

My priorities include the following;

·       The development of town centres as vibrant social and economic centres

·       The promotion of South Carlow as a desirable location for remote working

·       The development of the region’s touristic potential; the Barrow, the Blackstairs, historic towns and villages

·       Developing community facilities that serve the needs of the community; sporting, family support, mental health

·       Building a sustainable future for communities through the promotion of Sustainable Energy Communities

·       Supporting policies that underpin sustainable rural transport infrastructure

·       Prioritising policies that support biodiversity in our private and public spaces

·       Campaigning for social equality and inclusion in our communities

·       Advocating for investment in educational opportunities for socially disadvantaged and marginalised groups

I have a very strong civic spirit and am immensely proud of my hometown and region. I am active in its sporting, cultural and civic life and am optimistic for its future. We must base all our choices and actions on sustainable principles, locally and nationally. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for us all. I wish to play my part and contribute what I can to this effort, in my community in South Carlow, as the Green Party Local Area Representative and as a public representative. I hope as many as possible join me on this journey.

Rural Development

We must sustain and develop our rural communities. As a rural local area representative (LEA), I understand the need to ensure that rural development is prioritised in local policies and economic planning.

Town Centre Revitalisation

The rural economy and the wellbeing our town and village centres are closely linked. I will advocate for policies which promote the revitalisation of our town centres as vibrant social and economic centres.

Housing

As a nation we seem to be in the grip of a perennial housing crisis. We must rectify a dysfunctional housing market through rational and sustainable planning approaches that include the revitalisation of our town centres.

Tourism

Tourism can play a more important role in the rural economy of South Carlow. I will campaign for investment in sustainable development in tourism.

Biodiversity

I am already active in local initiatives to promote biodiversity and want develop and strengthen policy in this area at county level.

Waste and Recycling

Waste and recycling remain critical issues. I want to see more action on the adoption of circular economy measures in our county.

Sustainability

The principle of sustainability is the core issue in relation to climate change. All policies, local and national, must be guided by this principle.

Solidarity and the Just Transition

Urgent action is required in relation to the biodiversity and climate crises. We must ensure that all sections of society are supported to play their part in this urgent transition.

Investment and Job Creation

The green economy will create a sustainable economy. It is vital that South Carlow is supported in attracting investment and employment opportunities.
