Carlow Sports Partnership Plan

CSP held a consultation with South Carlow communitites in the McGrath Hall, Bagenalstown on Tuesday 19 March. The CSP facilitated a lively discussion on all aspects of sport and particiapation in the county and in the communitites present. Strengths and challenges were teased out with individuals and groups contributing to the discussion.

I recognised the contribution the CSP has made to participation in sports and physical activity since its inception. I also pointed to the the need to extend a welcome to minority groups in our communities, both to strengthen our clubs, but also to positively impact on integration within our communities.

Finally, I emphasised the need for continued investment in our sporting facilities. With population growth and the very welcome advent of increased participation of girls in juvenile grades, it has become increasingly challenging for clubs to facilitate training and games for their broad membership. Clubs like Bagenalstown AFC require a second playing pitch. This reality will need to be taken on board by planners when devising Loacl Area Plans. Sufficient area will need to be zoned for sports and recreation if communities are to be truly sustainable.
